It has been estimated that most Australian homes have an operational energy efficiency of around 1 to 2 stars. New homes are required to achieve a 5-star energy rating, but most homes in the City of Port Phillip were built before this requirement was enforced.
The diagram below illustrates the overall resource of an average building during its lifetime. It indicates the level of energy use that can occur at each stage of construction, throughout its use and, finally, during its demolition. It provides a perspective on where waste is currently occurring, and demonstrates how thoughtful design and use of materials can significantly reduce embodied energy and waste.
