recycling

Refers to the breakdown, treatment, reprocessing and adaptation of useful components from used items and materials to create new items and materials.

Examples of recycling include:

Reprocessing used metal products (such as aluminium cans, building steel, copper piping) into new metal products, either more of the same or other metal-based products.

Converting food waste from the kitchen and green waste from the garden into plant food with a composting system.

Recycling prevents the waste of potentially useful materials; reduces the consumption of fresh raw materials; reduces energy use, air pollution and water pollution by diverting waste from landfill; and generally emits less greenhouse gas emissions compared to virgin production.
